My prints are inspired by the wood itself, its surface grain, knots, and the shape of the block. Working with natural woods allows me to collaborate with a material that is organic and living, and has an energy of its own.
The images that I draw on the wood often come without much thought, appearing as if meant to be there. Once I am satisfied with the image, often with very little reworking, it is cut using long-handled gouges and a mallet.
Oil-based inks are used, and the print transferred by hand onto fine Japanese papers.
My interest in narrative perhaps comes from loving stories from an early age, and my study of art history. What is happening? Who are these people? What will happen next?
